At 23 years old the multitalented singer, songwriter, and producer Miguel Pimentel is definitely making his mark in the music industry. When you listen to his album you can easily hear why MTV has named Miguel among an elite group of “Artists to Watch in 2011”. Miguel was born in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles Cali., to a Mexican father and black mother. At a young age, he started to listen to a wide variety of music such as classic rock, hip-hop, funk, and rhythm and blues. By the age of 13, he began to pursue a career in music. In Fall 2007 Miguel signed a recording contract with Jive Records. He started his career as a songwriter, contributing to Usher’s album’s ‘Here I Stand’ and ‘Raymond v. Raymond’ along with contributing songs for other artists like Asher Roth and Musiq Soulchild. Miguel also released a mixtape in 2008 titled “Mischief: The Mixtape.”
This Fall was a busy time for Miguel; He toured with R&B icon Mary J. Blidge along with Jazmine Sullivan, as well as the cross-country OMG tour with Usher and Trey Songz! His debut single “All I Want is You,” featuring J. Cole was released 2010 and received heavy rotation on the radio and in clubs across the country. Miguel’s debut album ‘All I Want is You’ was released in November. Though the album peaked at 22 on the US R&B charts, it continues to get rave reviews from magazines and music lovers.
Although his musical style is categorized as R&B, fans of all genres have been attracted to his sound. His music also attracts fans of diverse ages, and ethnicities, which I got to see firsthand when I attended his February show at The Birchmere in Alexandria ,VA. I got the chance to sit down and speak with Miguel after his show Friday evening and asked him to describe his music. “I would describe it as eclectric,” he said, “and a synonym or similar phrase would be would be retro super future.” Miguel’s musical influences included Prince, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, John Lenon, and fellow Bison the late, great Donnie Hathaway. Miguel told me how fans can get to know him and his music, “I want them (fans) to come to my shows and see me perform, that is the best way for them to get to know me.”
Miguel has been nominated for a 2011 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song for “Finding My Way Back” sung by artist Jaheim. The second single “Sure Thing” off his debut album premiered on 106 & Park. And he is currently working on his second album ‘State of Art,’ which is scheduled to be released in 2011. It looks like things for Miguel will not be slowing down anytime soon. If you don’t know about him already, you may be seeing him soon among other music industry superstars.
